Si bien la teoría narrativa ha reconocido durante algún tiempo la importancia del contexto en el análisis de la ficción, este reconocimiento no se ha traducido rápidamente en un trabajo sustancial en campos como el poscolonialismo, donde las cuestiones situadas de valor e ideología han pasado a primer plano. La crítica poscolonial, por otra parte, a menudo ha descuidado las cualidades formales de la ficción en favor de interpretaciones temáticas ideológicas, precisamente debido al sospechoso legado del formalismo.
